James Carbray, comments and a selected reference
All that is known of Carbray as pipemaker comes from Francis O'Neill. Carbray grew up in Canada, parents reportedly from County Tyrone. He emigrated to the US in 1905, became a US Citizen 1912. Was married to Margaret Carbray; they had no children. Last heard of in Chicago in 1920 US Census; probably moved back to Canada between then and his death in Montreal, 1933.
Sets of pipes played by James Early and Bernard Delaney supposedly still exist. Do they have Carbray chanters with them?
Earlier researchers have confused James Carbray the gardner and pipemaker with another man of the same name, also born in Canada, living in Chicago and working as a plasterer. The plasterer died in Chicago in 1922.
