Michael Carolan, comments
Francis O'Neill spells his name Carolan, but the man associated with the 842 Greenwich Street address is listed in city directories with different names and different occupations. If it is the same person. From 1875-96 the name was given as Carlin, Carlane, Carroll, Carlon, and never Carolan. His occupation was smith, watchmaker (one year only, 1879), and for 1893 and 1895-96, musician.
Earlier city directory entries for Michael Carlin, smith, begin in 1867. This may or may not be the pipemaker.
